THIS IS...
REMOVING BARRIERS FOR THE BENEFIT OF EVERYONE

McNair Scholar
Senior, BA Psychology

UNM ARC celebrates 50 years of making higher education more accessible to thousands of college students with disabilities.

One moment can change the course of a person’s entire life. Brittany Huddleston experienced one of those moments at 18 when a spinal cord injury left the majority of her body paralyzed. She faced challenges many people never have to consider, but was even more committed to attending The University of New Mexico.

In addition to being a McNair Scholar, Brittany became an advocate and champion for students facing adversity.

In her studies, she researches the effects of trauma on college student’s well-being. Outside of the classroom, she works with UNM’s student government and the Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) to improve access to education and better student living.

Brittany was given a second chance in life and is passionate about removing barriers to education so others may have the same opportunities. Whether she’s applying real-world research to better community health or enacting positive change throughout the University for disabled students—Brittany uses her personal experience, along with her perseverance and compassion to create a safer, more  accessible space for the community.
